I am VERY grateful to be apart of a homeschooling association start-up! We had our first official get-together, and moms and kids alike really hit it off! There are three ways in South Carolina to legally homeschool. We opted for option two, which is to belong to an state-recognized assocation. This is not that group. There is a local group, but it's affilated with a very large church in the area, and the church seems to have a lot of say in how you are supposed to homeschool. That sort of defeats our purpose. Rather, we found a less hands-on association in the western part of the state, where we pay a nominal fee, and they in return gave us a card (in case we are ever questioned during a school day, we aren't "truant") and they handle filing the paperwork for us with the school district and state. However, a remote association doesn't leave us with any people! We are finding our people now:) We're lucky---we live in an area where very few people are actually from the area; that means, people are always looking to meet people and make friends--it's not that easy to do in a more settled area, like Wisconsin, where everybody already has their contacts.
Anyway, the activity in the photos above is an ice-breaker for the kids to get to know each other. It worked! They were shy with one-another, until after the activity--and then they couldn't get enough of running and playing:) (they got their gym time in today:D) We are looking forward to weekly get-togethers and/ or field trips!
