homeschool field trip to the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport
We started out on a field trip with our local homeschool group. We took a guided tour of the Savannah-Hilton Head International airport.
Ok, so it's a relatively small airport, and they don't (yet) even have customs...but it's still a very lovely airport, as far as airports go;)
We tried to pick daddy up from work, since he literally works RIGHT next door (Gulfstream aerospace...they need the runways too;).
The first hour of our tour was even spent, taxi-ing on the real runways in the airport shuttle, with the Operations manager giving us the grand tour.
Half the tour was about Gulf Stream next door;) There was another Gulf Stream dad with us. J even called me to see if we were still near his buildings, but we weren't...he was going to step outside and wave to us...which would have been pretty fun:)
I'm sure very few people ever have the opportunity to just drive around the run ways in a real airport. The driver was in touch with air traffic control tower...we had to stop a couple of times to let planes land or take off (they had priority over us;). Like this one:D
We also learned that since there are ponds all around the runways (important or water run-off), that they have tBo keep the ponds clear of alligators. There have been a few alligators on the runways; as well as deer and coyote.
It's also interesting, that the original owners of the farmland (before it was sold to become the airport), are still buried....literally beneath the runway...the only airport in the country with grave sites on the runways:) That was part of the deal of the sale of the land:) These are the grave markers:
Most of the rest of the remaining historic graves, were relocated to the famous Bonaventure Cemetary of Savannah (you know, that famous statue from "Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil.")
The remainder of the tour was back inside the airport, teaching the kiddos about baggage, and ticketing, and the arrival and departures board...as well as a little tour of their small art gallery. A great time was had by all! (I'm telling you, that shuttle tour, taxi-ing us ON the run-way, along with all the commentary from the Operations Manager, was pretty darn cool! (The man furthest to the left, was our driver...he wanted pix of us and wanted to be in the picture...he was pretty excited about the tour...and I imagine driving around the run-way;)...I guess most people just don't know that they offer this service. There is a limit of 25 people per tour, so there will be at least 2-3 more field trips for others from our homeschool group. A great time was had by all!

park day with friends
and South Carolina is starting to bloom (evidenced by the flowering pink bushes:).....spring is absolutely BEAUTIFUL in the Carolinas! My first visit here before moving happened to be in April, when everything was just brilliant with flowers and colorful bushes...SC KNEW I was craving color after such a long winter, and South CArolina knew just how to lure me in:) And I will NEVER take the gorgeous colors for granted...they are amazing! I think I'm most definitely due for a trip back to Magnolia Plantation and Gardens next month.....South Carolina in all its spring glory! pumpkin farm field trip!
did I ever mention that I LOVE pumpkins ;)
she had no problem riding this when we first started coming here three years ago....
hay ride to the pumpkin field (where they import the pumpkins and scatter them around:)
she's catching up to gramma:)

brought us home some goodies....Piper approves:)
burnt orange is my favorite color....but you probably already knew that :)

Savannah Wildlife Refuge Homeschool Field Trip
this was a fantastic field trip. We've been here before, but we mostly drove through the refuge. It's called the Savannah Wildlife Refuge, but we go to an area of it that is actually in South Carolina....at least the office is, I'm not sure if the refuge drive is in GA or SC? It's pretty darn close:)
Today we met up with some homeschoolers and spent quite a bit of time in their headquarters office, which is quite beautiful! It was opened in 2010, the year we moved down! They offer many programs for school-aged groups, but they also offer a Junior Refuge Manager badge, which you have to earn.....and my girls really worked hard to earn their badges today! (They even took a pledge with the Park Ranger!) My girls actually requested that we split up with the group, when they left to drive through the refuge, so they could concentrate on researching and answering the questions in their books. After they completed the "office" portion of their books, we then headed over to the refuge, driving and making lots of stops to observe. We had a wonderful day, the girls worked hard and had a blast, and I even managed to sneak in some birthday gifts for Fairy Girl (because shamefully, her birthday is three days away and I've got nothin' :O)
Here are some highlights from today's adventure:
a GREAT day was had by all (and somehow I even managed to sell a bracelet in my Etsy shop while I was having all this fun;). I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful refuge and their new facility; they have a LOT to offer!
